Collard greens are like a loose leaf cabbage that doesn’t form a head. This variety was popular in Victorian times for its non hearting crops of long, wavy leaves. Expect a bumper crop of long, dark green leaves with a mild flavour. With a nearly year long cropping period, a second sowing is an option in autumn. Delicious steamed or in soups and also ideal for making Chinese crispy seaweed!

Heat and cold tolerant allowing nearly year round growing.

Growing Information

Sowing info

Sow seed indoors from February to March at a depth of 1cm deep. Keep at a temp of 20-25C until germination (4 -7 days). Grow plants on in cooler conditions until all risk of frost has passed and plants have 2-3 true leaves. Acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 – 10 days before planting out in full sun.

Growing info

Plant in fertile soil at a distance of 50cm apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting. A second sowing from August to September can be made for overwintering. If all flower shoots are diligently removed, plants can be treated almost as perennial.
