We love this purple heirloom artichoke that produces ‘edimental’ purple flower buds. The buds grow large on long stems up to 1.5m and give you a delicious perennial crop. Steam them and pluck off the leaves to dip them in melted butter for a treat worth waiting for. Alternatively, preserve the hearts in oil or vinegar.
Perennial.
Average 15 seeds.

Grow globe artichoke plants in rich, fertile, well drained soil in full sun with protection from strong winds. Direct sow globe artichoke seed outdoors from March to April when the soil has warmed up. Alternatively start in small pots of module tray in an unheated greenhouse and plant out after last frost. Fully productive the year after sowing.
Cover young globe artichoke plants with fleece when required to protect them from frosts, once mature they are more frost hardy. Mulch the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. Throughout summer, water globe artichokes regularly, particularly during dry periods.
Sowing Months: February – May Harvest Months: July – October Position: Full sun
