Hyacinth Bean Ruby Moon

This perennial climbing plant, also called Lablab produces fragrant flowers much like a bean, followed by striking vivid purple pods. The small beans within the pods can be eaten round in the pods or matured and used as a drying bean, and are superb when cooked in curries. Its ornamental appeal makes it the ultimate ‘edimental’ to grow in the veg patch or in your main borders.

Tender perennial, need protection in winter or treat as an annual.

Growing Information

Sowing info

Sow from March to May, 1.5mm deep in a peat free compost, germination takes 5-14 days at 20-25C. Plants hate to be root bound so be prompt with potting up. When well grown, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out in late spring after all risk of frost has passed.

Growing info

These are voracious climbers so make sure to provide support in their final position, they look fantastic over arches. The beans can be slow to swell inside the pods so harvest when you can feel the swollen bean inside. Please note these beans must be cooked before eating.
