Dahlia Black Beauty

£2.95

Few people know that the dahlia was originally introduced to Europe as a food crop, and Black Beauty is a glorious reminder of that forgotten history. Near-black petals revealing a deep maroon-burgundy shimmer in sunlight, surrounding a glowing golden-yellow centre, outstanding as a cut flower from the first year. Then in autumn, lift the tubers for eating, remarkable roasted or made into rosti. The prettiest root vegetable you can grow.

Sowing info

Surface sowing onto moist peat-free compost and covering to 5mm. Do not exclude light, it aids germination. Keep at 20–25°C until germination in 7–21 days. Grow on in cooler, well-lit conditions before planting out after all risk of frost has passed, 30cm apart.

Growing info

Water consistently and deadhead regularly to keep flowering prolifically. Harvest cut flowers when blooms are three quarters open. In autumn, after the first frost blackens the foliage, lift and store in a frost-free place, keeping some to eat. Reaches 60–90cm at maturity.
