What Vegetable Seeds To Sow In February

Veg Seeds to Sow in February

As February rolls in, it brings with it the promise of spring and the opportunity to start sowing the seeds for a bountiful vegetable garden. While the weather may still be chilly in many regions, this month marks the beginning of preparations for the upcoming growing season. With careful planning and selection, you can set the stage for a vibrant and productive garden. Let’s explore which vegetable seeds are ideal for sowing in February, ensuring a fruitful harvest in the months to come.

Chillies, Peppers and Aubergines

If you’re well equipped with grow lights and heat mats, you can start growing chillies, peppers and aubergines now.  Your equipment will help you to get ahead on the growing season for these slow growing crops.  Don’t be tempted to start them this month if you don’t have heat and light as you’ll end up with leggy and unhealthy seedlings.

Early Greens

February is the perfect time to sow seeds for early greens such as lettuce, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard. These cold-hardy vegetables can withstand cooler temperatures and will thrive as the days grow longer. Consider varieties that are specifically bred for early planting, as they will establish quickly and provide an early harvest to enjoy in salads and stir-fries.

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables like carrots, radishes, and beets are excellent choices for February sowing. While they may take longer to mature compared to leafy greens, starting them early will ensure a steady supply throughout the growing season. Choose varieties that are suited to cooler temperatures and provide adequate spacing to allow for proper root development.

Peas and Beans

Peas and beans are cool-season crops that can be sown directly into the garden in February. Whether you prefer dwarf peas or climbing peas, now is the time to plant them for a spring harvest. We like to sow them in drain pipes so that they can easily be transplanted straight into the veg bed when they’re around 20cm tall.

Brassicas

Brassicas, including broccoli, kohlrabi, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, are well-suited to February sowing. These hardy vegetables thrive in cooler temperatures and will appreciate an early start. Begin seeds indoors for later transplanting or sow them directly into the garden once the soil can be worked. Choose varieties that are adapted to your region and provide ample spacing to accommodate their growth.

Tomatoes

We actually start growing tomatoes in February.  Equipped with heat and lights, this is another crop you can get started on.  Again, without this equipment it’s best to leave this until March or April to ensure healthy plants.  The only problem we have is choosing from our huge range of gorgeous heirloom tomatoes!

Herbs

Herbs such as parsley, basil, and dill can be sown in February to establish a fragrant and flavourful herb garden. These versatile plants can be grown indoors or outdoors, depending on your climate and available space. Start seeds in containers or sow them directly into the garden, ensuring they receive adequate sunlight and water as they germinate and grow.

Ready, set grow!

As February unfolds, the prospect of a thriving vegetable garden beckons. By sowing the right seeds at the right time, you can set the stage for a successful growing season ahead. Whether you’re cultivating leafy greens, hearty root vegetables, or flavorful herbs, the possibilities are endless. With careful planning and attention to detail, your February garden will soon flourish, yielding a bounty of fresh and delicious produce to enjoy throughout the year. So roll up your sleeves, grab your seeds, and let the planting begin!
