Gourd Luffa

A wonderfully versatile heirloom gourd with two quite different uses. Picked young, it can be cooked much like a courgette; left to mature and dry on the vine, the same fruit yields a fibrous interior that can be cut into natural household sponges – a compostable alternative to the plastic kind. Eat them when they’re young and tender, or let them fully mature before drying.

Growing Information

Sowing info

Much easier to grow than people think, soak seeds for 24h before sowing. Sow seeds indoors 2cm deep on their edge and keep at 25-28C. Germination takes up to 21 days. Keep warm and protected until after last frost when they can be planted into their final position.

Growing info

These plants love heat so will perform best in a polytunnel or greenhouse, the hotter they are, the more they produce. We’ve had over 20 large luffa from one plant in a hot summer! These are efficient climbers so provide adequate support.
