Winter Lettuce Speckled Trout

Sowing info

Surface sow onto moist compost and just cover. Lettuce will not germinate in hot weather, so do not supplement heat and avoid sowing in the hottest days of summer.

Growing info

Heat tolerant and slow to bolt. When you harvest lettuce, you can just remove the lower, outer leaves to significantly extend your harvest period as the plant will continue to grow. Regular succession sowing will ensure a continuous crop.

Swiss Chard Peppermint

Sowing info

Sow in module trays 1cm deep. Grow on in the greenhouse until plants reach a height of around 5cm after the last frost.

Growing info

Ready to harvest in 50 days. Harvest regularly by selecting a few stems from each plant to promote fresh growth and to extend the cropping season. More mature plants become frost hardy and will generally survive winter meaning you’ll have a harvest into the next year.

Bok Choy Purple Lady

Sowing info

Sow early indoors in module trays or direct in well prepared ground. Sow seed thinly 1.5cm deep and thin as necessary to leave up to 20 cm between the plants. You can use the thinnings as salad or garnish. Bok choy is fast growing and can be cut at about 3 weeks for baby leaves or 4 to 6 weeks for full size. Not recommended for mid summer growing due to its tendency to blot.

Growing info

Succession planting will give you a longer season, undercover sowings can also extend the growing season into winter. Once mature, plants are cold tolerant but will not survive a heavy frost.

Mustard Red Lace

Sowing info

Surface sow onto moist compost and just cover. Plant out when big enough to handle. Alternatively sow direct 1cm deep. Regular succession sowing throughout the year will give an almost year round supply.

Growing info

Can be grown as a spring crop but may bolt in warmer weather so will perform better in the cooler months. Treat as a cut and come again when harvesting. No need to cover it as it’s relatively unbothered by pests and birds.

Rocket Sweet Oakleaf

Sowing info

Direct sow rocket seeds from April to June outdoors, or under cover in autumn, into moist, well drained soil. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm. Rocket dislikes the warmest weather so may bolt if grown through mid summer. Sow every 3 weeks for a continuous supply.

Growing info

When large enough to handle, thin rocket seedlings to 20cm apart, or leave un-thinned and harvest as ‘baby salad’ leaves or as a ‘cut and come again’ crop. Sowings made in late summer will continue cropping into winter if protected by cloches, if sown undercover, or in pots on the windowsill.

Garden jobs to do this September

  • Clear out spent summer crops and tuck the empty beds in with a cosy blanket of compost or mulch.
  • Lift and divide tired, overcrowded perennials while the soil’s still warm enough for their roots to settle in.
  • Keep deadheading and harvesting, every snip tells your plants to keep the good stuff coming.
