Onion Bianca Musona

Sowing info

Can be direct sown or multi sown into module trays before planting out. Sow seed 1 cm deep and keep the soil lightly moist and the temperature around 15 C until germination. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed.

Growing info

Thin seedlings to roughly 10 cm spacing, thinnings can be enjoyed in salads. Onions are ready to harvest when foliage flops over and starts to yellow and onions should then be hung somewhere dry, to cure the skin for 2 weeks before storage.

Edible Houseplant Papaya

Sowing info

Sow several papaya seeds 1 cm deep in small, well-draining pots with a loose, sterile seed-starting mix. Planting multiple seeds increases the chance of getting a fruiting plant. Keep soil moist and warm (25–30 °C), cover to maintain humidity, and air daily. Seeds germinate in 1–3 weeks. Thin to the strongest seedling once it has a few true leaves and transplant to a larger pot when 15–30 cm tall.

Growing info

Use a large pot (45–55 L / 45 cm wide) with rich, well-draining soil. Provide 6–8 hours of bright, direct sunlight daily, adding grow lights in winter if needed. Keep temperatures 21–29 °C with high humidity (60 %+), and move indoors before it drops below 15 °C. Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist, reducing in winter.

Microgreen Red Shiso

Red shiso microgreens with deep purple aromatic leaves

Sowing info

Scatter seeds evenly over a shallow tray filled with moist, well-draining growing medium or microgreen mat and press them lightly into the surface.

Growing info

Place the tray in bright, indirect light and keep the medium damp. Ready to harvest in just 10–14 days, harvest before they grow their second set of true leaves. Snip just above the soil line for fresh, crunchy greens. Can also be grown on to full size and eaten as a herb.

Microgreen Nasturtium Alaska

Sowing info

Fill a shallow tray with fine, well-draining compost and scatter all seeds evenly across the surface. Lightly press them into the soil and cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Keep the tray in a, warm spot and mist gently to keep the surface moist until germination.

Growing info

Once seedlings emerge, ensure they get plenty of light. Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. In just 14–21 days, your microgreens will be ready to harvest, snip at soil level and enjoy their crisp, peppery flavour straight onto salads or sandwiches.

Garden Berry Cranberry

Sowing info

Sow seeds in pots of acidic peat free compost. Lightly cover the seeds with compost of  vermiculite, can keep at around 18c for 2 weeks, then cover and place in the fridge for 3-6 weeks. After refrigeration, return to germination temperature, if germination does not occur in 6-10 weeks, repeat refrigeration.

Growing info

Plant cranberries in acidic, moist soil with good sunlight. Space plants 30-40 cm apart and mulch to retain moisture. Water regularly, ideally with rain water especially in dry spells, and prune lightly to encourage bushy growth. Berries will appear in autumn; pick when fully red. Ideal for containers. Final height 15cm.

Garden jobs to do this December

  • Check on your stored crops and tubers. Look over your dahlias, squash, onions and apples. Take out anything soft or mouldy before it spreads, so the rest stay sound through the winter.
  • Prune apple and pear trees while they’re dormant. Cut out any dead, damaged or crossing branches to open up the middle, so light and air can reach next year’s fruit.
  • Curl up with a cuppa and plan next year’s plot. Sketch out your beds, note what thrived and what flopped, and start dreaming up your wishlist for spring.
