Asparagus Mary Washington

£2.95

In the early 1900s, asparagus rust was devastating crops across America and Europe. Dr J.B. Norton of the USDA spent years developing a resistant line, and Mary Washington, released in 1919, was his masterpiece. The most popular asparagus variety in America for over 75 years and parent of many modern hybrids. Large, tender, deep green spears with subtle purple tips, sweet and nutty in flavour. Plant once and harvest for decades.

Average 50 seeds.

Growing Information

Sowing info

Soak seeds overnight to aid germination. Sow indoors 12 weeks before the last frost, two to three seeds per module at 20–25°C. Germination takes 14–21 days. Grow on until plants reach 15–20cm before planting out into a prepared trench after all risk of frost has passed. Space crowns 30–45cm apart.

Growing info

Mulch generously each autumn. Allow ferns to die back naturally before cutting. Begin harvesting spears in year two, never harvest all spears, leave some to feed the crown. Harvest sparingly in year 2 then as normal going forward.
