Amaranth Molten Fire

Amaranth is a versatile annual ‘edimental’ and this heirloom variety has real impact, growing to a height of up to 1m. Incredibly dramatic in its colouring, with dark red nearly black foliage topped by the almost glowing, bright red leaves that resemble molten lava. Its nutritious leaves can be eaten just like spinach and the drought tolerant nature of the plant means it does well throughout summer without bolting. Will also give a grain harvest in Autumn.

Growing Information

Sowing info

Surface sow seed from February to April in pots of moist peat free compost or direct in place from March. Keep at a temperature of 20 to 25C during germination, and allow the temperature to reduce at night. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Light helps germination, which usually takes 3 to 15 days.

Growing info

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into small pots and grow on until after last frost. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out in full sun. Amaranth is generally unbothered by pests and so doesn’t need netting.
