Overwintering Onion Karmen

£3.00

A true gem for the kitchen garden, ‘Karmen’ is a red onion with a delicately sweet flavour that shines in salads, on burgers, or in any dish that calls for a gentle, fragrant onion. Perfect for autumn sowing for an earlier crop next year, it’s crisp white flesh, ringed with vibrant crimson circles, isn’t just beautiful, it tastes as good as it looks.

Growing Information

Sowing info

Either sow in spring as a standard main crop or in autumn for overwintering. Can be direct sown or multi sown into module trays before planting out. Sow seed 1 cm deep and keep the soil lightly moist and the temperature around 15C until germination. Plant out when around pencil size.

Growing info

Thin seedlings to roughly 10 cm spacing, thinnings can be enjoyed in salads. Onions are ready to harvest when foliage flops over and starts to yellow and onions should then be hung somewhere dry, to cure the skin for 2 weeks before storage. Overwintered crops can be planted out in late autumn or be kept in modules to plant out in spring.
