Melon Kajari

Melon Kajari

£4.00

A rare jewel from the Punjab region of India, Kajari’s ornamental striped rind transforms from green and ivory to vivid orange as it ripens, nature’s own harvest signal. The name derives from Sanskrit meaning “rich” and “luxurious,” and one bite of the honeydew-sweet, subtly musky flesh confirms it. Brought back from near-obscurity by botanical explorer Joseph Simcox, who spent eight years tracking down seeds. Extraordinary.

Growing Information

Sowing info

Can be a fussy germinater so sow more than you need. Sow 1 cm deep in small pots. Keep moist at all times. Keep temperatures above 21C, germination usually takes 6 to 10 days but can take longer. Grow on in good light at around 15 to 18C before planting out when all risk of frost has passed.

Growing info

Will perform best in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel. Soil and air temps must have warmed up and all risk of frost passed. Train your melons with sturdy support or even over an arch as this is a smaller variety.
