This gourd is a fun way to create a home for your garden birds. This vigorous vine, also called Calabash or Bottle Gourd, produces bright green, bottle-shaped fruits that dry into tough, waterproof shells. Grown on a trellis or fence, the gourds keep their shape, ready to be turned into cosy birdhouses, just drill an access and drainage hole and hang. They last up to ten years.
Average 6 seeds.

Soak seeds for 24 hours before sowing. Sow 1 cm deep in individual pots of peat free compost and keep at 20–25 °C until germination, which takes 7–21 days, don’t exclude light.
Gradually acclimatise seedlings before planting out after frost, spacing 60cm apart in deep, rich, well-drained soil in full sun. Train over a trellis or arch to keep fruits round. Harvest at desired size and dry fully in an airy place indoors. Can also be eaten when young and tender.
