Mangelwurzel Mammoth Red

Sowing info

Can be sown in module trays from late February or sown direct outdoors from March to July in a sunny position. Germination will usually take 12 to 24 days.  When sowing direct plant seed at a depth of 3 cm in shallow drills.  Protect young seedlings from birds.

Growing info

Mangels are hardy and are usually free from pests and diseases. Water regularly in hot, dry weather to prevent the root from becoming tough and woody. Though the roots can become extremely large, they are at their most tender when head size or smaller.

Beetroot Cylindra

Sowing info

Can be multi sown in module trays from late February or sown direct outdoors from March to July in a sunny position. Germination will usually take 12 to 24 days. When sowing direct plant seed at a depth of 3cm in shallow drills. Protect young seedlings from birds.

Growing info

As beetroot roots swell, harvest the largest roots to allow more room for others to grow larger.

Pak Choi Tatsoi

Sowing info

Best sown direct in well prepared ground. Sprinkle seed thinly in drills 30 cm apart and thin as necessary leaving 20 – 30 cm between the plants. You can use the thinnings as salad or garnish. Pak Choi is fast growing and can be cut at about 3 weeks for baby leaf or 4 to 6 weeks after planting at full size.

Growing info

Succession planting will give you a longer season, undercover sowings can also extend the growing season. You can also try a quick crop by sowing again in early spring.

Harvest by cutting individual leaves as required.

Autumn Radish Watermelon

Radish Seeds

Sowing info

Can be multisown in module trays or sown direct outdoors from July to the first half of September in a sunny position. These are cool weather loving radishes so in very hot periods, delay sowing until the weather cools down a bit. Germination will usually take 7 to 10 days. When sowing direct plant seed at a depth of 3cm in shallow drills. Protect young seedlings from birds.

Growing info

As roots swell, harvest the largest roots to allow more room for others to grow larger. Succession sowing every 2-4 weeks will ensure a continual supply.

Overwintering Onion Senshyu

Sowing info

Either sow in spring as a standard main crop or in autumn for overwintering. Sow now in early summer for sturdy plants that’ll sit through winter and give you a head start next spring. Can be direct sown or multi sown into module trays before planting out. Sow seed 1 cm deep and keep the soil lightly moist and the temperature around 15C until germination. Plant out when around pencil size.

Growing info

Thin seedlings to roughly 10 cm spacing, thinnings can be enjoyed in salads. Onions are ready to harvest when foliage flops over and starts to yellow and onions should then be hung somewhere dry, to cure the skin for 2 weeks before storage. Overwintered crops can be planted out in late autumn or be kept in modules to plant out in spring.

Garden jobs for this August

  • Keep harvesting, even when you can’t keep up. Most crops produce more the more you pick, so go often and pick small.
  • Deadhead like you mean it. Snip off spent flowers before they set seed and your plants will keep blooming for weeks.
  • Water deeply, not often. A proper soak every few days sends roots downward, while a daily splash keeps them lazy at the surface.
