A popular Italian heirloom that was a staple long before the arrival of squash into Europe. These amazing gourds will easily grow to a metre or more but are best picked when 50cm or less and enjoyed as a courgette that won’t go too soft when cooked.

Sow from April to May indoors. Soak seeds for 24h before sowing. Sow 1cm deep on their edge and cover with compost and keep in a warm place at 20-25C. Keep the surface of the compost moist, but not too wet, germination in 5-7 days. Plant out into a sunny sheltered position after all risk of frost has passed.
Plants can grow very large so allow sufficient space to sprawl or supply a sturdy support to climb. If straight fruits are desired plant must be grown vertically.
