An extra-early variety, this pretty little heirloom is faster growing than some other chicory. From the 18th century town Castelfranco, near Venice, its charming pale white leaves with red freckles, make a beautiful addition to the plate. It has a subtle bitterness that balances sweet notes. Tastes wonderful roasted and caramelised.

Sow seed 1cm deep and keep moist. Does not need extra heat to germinate. Grow on in individual module trays until planting out after last frost.
Chicory is relatively low maintenance once established but will need consistent watering through the hottest months. These plants are perennial and if roots are left in the ground when harvested, will regrow. Extremely frost tolerant, in fact cold weather intensifies the leaf colour.
