This Japanese Kintoki (softer texture) carrot dating back to the 1500’s, produces long silky red roots. Traditionally grown around Kyoto, they are traditionally enjoyed during New Year celebrations carved into plum blossom shapes to symbolise fertility. The long, tapered roots reaching 25-40cm, have an exceptionally smooth texture and a distinctive sweetness.
Average 100 seeds.

Sow carrot seeds thinly where they are to grow at a depth of 1cm. Germination will take 10 to 20 days. To avoid attracting carrot root fly, avoid thinning seedlings, instead allowing them to grow larger and harvest every other carrot to enjoy as baby roots. Carrots dislike soils with too many nutrients, so avoid use of fertilisers and manures. Sandy soils produce the straightest roots.Â
Carrots perform well in containers of at least 30 cm depth and raised 60cm off the ground can prevent carrot root fly attack. Water well to encourage germination. Once germinated, carrots should be watered only when necessary.
Sowing Months: April – July
Harvest Months: August – November
