Tomatoes are fast growing plants, so best started in mid to late spring. They need heat to germinate, and benefit from lots of light, so supplement both if necessary. Germination takes place within 1-2 weeks.Growing infoOnce plants reach roughly 20cm in height, start feeding with quarter strength organic feed. Pot on when roots are visible through drainage holes and plant out after last frost. Will require support. Remove side shoots and lower 50% of foliage to maintain straight, healthy plants. Though tomatoes can be grown outside, they will perform better for longer in a polytunnel or greenhouse.Blog – How to Sow and Grow Tomatoes Cucumber Dragon’s EggSowing infoCucumber seeds should be sown in a warm place from March to April. Sow the seeds on their sides at a depth of 1cm in small pots of peat free compost, and keep at a temperature of approx 20C until they germinate. This usually only takes 7-10 days. Once they’ve germinated, you can move them to a bright windowsill or frost free greenhouse and grow them there until they’re big enough to be transplanted.Growing infoPlant out into a sheltered sunny position after all risk of frost has passed. Will require some sort of support to climb. Keep harvesting fruits regularly to encourage a continual supply. Onion Isobel RoseSowing infoCan be direct sown or multi sown into module trays before planting out. Sow seed 1 cm deep and keep the soil lightly moist and the temperature around 15 C until germination. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed.Growing infoThin seedlings to roughly 10 cm spacing, thinnings can be enjoyed in salads. Onions are ready to harvest when foliage flops over and starts to yellow and onions should then be hung somewhere dry, to cure the skin for 2 weeks before storage.Blog – How to Sow and Grow Onions Lettuce Marvel of Four SeasonsSowing infoSurface sow onto moist compost and just cover. Lettuce will not germinate in hot weather, so do not supplement heat and avoid sowing in the hottest days of summer. Plant out after the last frost.Growing infoWhen you harvest lettuce, you can just remove the lower, outer leaves to significantly extend your harvest period as the plant will continue to grow. Regular succession sowing will ensure a continuous crop. Blog – How to Sow and Grow Lettuce Sprouting Broccoli White EyeSowing infoSow at 4 week intervals from March to June. Sow thinly, 1cm deep and cover lightly with soil. Keep watered during dry weather. Transplant seedlings to their final position when they have 4-5 leaves and are large enough to handle, about 5 weeks from sowing.Growing infoAllow a minimum of 60cm between plants. Firm in well and water regularly. Harvest before the flowers open and when shoots are around 10cm long. Regular picking will encourage more shoots. Don’t remove the large leaves as these will protect the next batch of developing shoots. Place some fine mesh netting over the plants to prevent against pest damage. Garden jobs for this AprilHarden off young plants: Start moving greenhouse plants outside during the day so they gradually adjust to outdoor conditions. Tie in climbing plants: Gently tie sweet peas and other climbers to their supports while the stems are still soft. Mulch fruit beds: Add a layer of compost or well-rotted manure around fruit bushes and perennial crops to feed the soil.
