A showstopper from Japan’s ancient Kyoto vegetable heritage, Benigoromo meaning “crimson robe”, earns its name with deeply serrated, fiery purple leaves that intensify in colour as temperatures drop. Milder and crispier than its spicier green cousins, it has a subtle mustard flavour and is at its magnificent best raw in salads. A brilliant cut-and-come-again crop.

Sowing info

Sow seeds early in module trays or directly where it is to grow about 1 cm deep. Keep at 15-20C, germination takes around 7 days. Harden off and plant out once large enough to handle.

Succession sow for a continuous crop and keep watered in warmer weather to encourage growth.Treat as a cut and come again crop to prolong the harvest. Growing undercover through winter will extend the harvest. 25-40 days to maturity.
