Tomato Atomic Fusion

Sowing info

Surface sow seeds in small pots of moist, peat-free compost and just cover. Tomatoes are fast growing plants, so best started in mid to late spring. They need heat to germinate, and benefit from lots of light, so supplement both if necessary. Germination takes place within 1-2 weeks.

Growing info

Once plants reach roughly 20cm in height, start feeding with quarter strength organic feed. Pot on when roots are visible through drainage holes and plant out after last frost. Will require support. Remove side shoots and lower 50% of foliage to maintain straight, healthy plants. Though tomatoes can be grown outside, they will perform better for longer in a polytunnel or greenhouse.

Cucumber Dragon’s Egg

Sowing info

Cucumber seeds should be sown in a warm place from March to April. Sow the seeds on their sides at a depth of 1cm in small pots of peat free compost, and keep at a temperature of approx 20C until they germinate. This usually only takes 7-10 days. Once they’ve germinated, you can move them to a bright windowsill or frost free greenhouse and grow them there until they’re big enough to be transplanted.

Growing info

Plant out into a sheltered sunny postion after all risk of frost has passed. Will require some sort of support to climb. Keep harvesting fruits regularly to encourage a continual supply.

Lettuce Arcade Baby Leaf

Sowing info

Surface sow onto moist compost and just cover. Lettuce will not germinate in hot weather, so do not supplement heat and avoid sowing in the hottest days of summer. Plant out after last frost.

Growing info

Heat tolerant and slow to bolt. When you harvest lettuce, you can just remove the lower, outer leaves to significantly extend your harvest period as the plant will continue to grow. Regular succession sowing will ensure a contiunuous crop.

Garen jobs for this April

  • Harden off young plants: Start moving greenhouse plants outside during the day so they gradually adjust to outdoor conditions.
  • Tie in climbing plants: Gently tie sweet peas and other climbers to their supports while the stems are still soft.
  • Mulch fruit beds: Add a layer of compost or well-rotted manure around fruit bushes and perennial crops to feed the soil.
