She Grows Veg Show Garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live

Life is incredibly busy here at She Grows Veg as Lucy has designed a show garden for this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live.

The garden is 100% edible and is called ‘The Secret Homestead’.

The Secret Homestead garden aims to break traditional veg patch ‘tropes’ and challenge what edible gardens can be. The dramatic black and white palette, with pops of coral and pink, sets this garden apart from conventional kitchen gardens. Initially the borders appear purely ornamental, however, all plants are edible. On closer inspection, some conventional vegetables can be found, but in their most decorative forms. Just as the plants are dual-purpose, so too are the decorative elements. Sculptures double as insect habitats and mushroom gardens, a hand painted door reveals a root cellar. Beauty is as important as abundance in this alternative food garden.

The garden has been created with a TINY budget which has meant that Lucy has grown all of the plants for the garden herself. This has been no mean feat and Lucy has battled with aphids, very variable weather conditions and the huge challenge of transporting such a volume of plants to the show site.

We have an army of volunteers lined up to help us build the garden and we can’t wait to welcome members of the public during the show.

The garden is a ‘walk through’ garden so come on down to the show and come and see it for yourself. Lucy and her business partner Kate will be on hand throughout the show to talk to you about the garden and all of the incredible edibles which will be on show.
