An old Italian heirloom dating back to 1400 that gets its name from its flat, button like appearance, also known as Borettana. A multi-purpose onion, plant it densely to produce a smaller onion suitable for salads or pickling or give it room for a larger onion for cooking and storing.

Growing Information

Sowing info

Can be direct sown or multi sown into module trays before planting out. Sow seed 1cm deep and keep the soil lightly moist and the temperature around 15C until germination. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed.

Growing info

When harvesting for spring onions, slice off about 1cm above the roots so it can regrow. For larger onions, thin seedlings to rougly 10cm spacing. Onions are mature and ready to harvest when foliage flops over and starts to yellow.
