This purple-flowered biennial variety bursts into bloom the spring after sowing with clouds of violet blossoms that are a magnet for early pollinators. Once the flowers fade, they produce drifts of iconic silver seed pods that shimmer like moonlight when dried.

Sow indoors from March, or directly outside from April. Sow onto moist seed compost and cover lightly with soil. Germination takes 2–4 weeks at around 18–20°C.
Pot on seedlings as necessary. Harden off gradually before planting out after last frost, spaced around 30cm apart. Flowers and sets seed the year after sowing. Can be harvested for fresh flowers but is more highly prized for the silvery seed pods that follow. Final height 90cm.
