Step 2: Find out when to sow your seeds

This sowing calendar comes straight from the garden, shaped by years of growing veg through the different seasons.

Use it as a guide to help you sow at the right time, grow stronger plants, and get the most from your veg patch. This may also influence which seeds you get started with!

Step 3: Assemble the kit you need

Compost

We recommend a good-quality, peat-free compost as it’s better for the environment. It’s a small choice that makes a big difference, and it grows veg just as beautifully.

Seed Trays / Pots

You’ll need some seed trays to support healthy seedlings from the very start. Look for sturdy options that suit your space and can be reused season after season.

Plant Labels

Labels might seem small, but they’re a beginner’s best friend and help you remember exactly what you’ve sown as your seedlings start to grow.

Frequently asked questions

I’m a beginner, how can I learn how to grow my seeds?

On the back of every seed packet we sell is a QR code. Scan this and it will take you to a YouTube video on how to grow the variety. Alternatively, head to our YouTube channel and browse the many helpful videos we have there.

Are there any perennial vegetables I can grow?

Yes there are! Take a look at our blog HERE for some ideas and inspiration.

What are open pollinated seeds?

Open-pollinated seeds are pollinated by a natural process in which plants reproduce by allowing pollinators (such as bees, butterflies, wind or other natural elements) to transfer pollen between flowers within the same species. Unlike hybrid methods (sometimes marked as F1 on seed packets), there’s no human intervention or specific breeding programmes. Take a look at our blog HERE to find out more.

Are colourful or heirloom seeds harder to grow?

No, they’re grown in exactly the same way as other veg seeds of the same type. So a black carrot is just as easy to grow as an orange one for example!

My seeds aren’t germinating

Here at She Grows Veg we trial and germination test all of our seeds varieties to ensure that the seeds are of the highest quality. Germination can fail for a number of reasons and we’ve written a blog to help you with that HERE.

Do you have any varieties I can grow in a small space or container?

Yes we do. Take a look HERE for all of the varieties suitable for a small space. We also have a helpful blog HERE which may help.

How long do veg seeds last?

They last from 2-6 years depending on the variety. Longevity depends on how you store them. HERE is a blog on how best to store your seeds.
